This bagpipe was commissioned by members of the Danish group Suleskaer. They wanted me to develop
a pipe suitable for Danish music, based on illustrations in the book 'Sackpipan i Nordan', which
contains a chapter on the Danish pipes. Throughout Northern Europe there are many depictions from
the sixteenth century of mouth-blown bagpipes with two drones of equal length. These have been
the inspiration for design.
The drones have separate stocks and are tuned in unison to the chanter's bottom G. The chanter
has a wide cylindrical bore with a large reed, and both F and F sharp at the top can be fingered.
It plays in the same octave as the G Leicestershire Smallpipe chanter, but the wide bore gives it
surprising volume and a punchy sound. |
